Maybe Jonah should have expected it.

He just hadn’t had the time. After Tommy had kissed him in the dark and stayed over, Jonah had spent Sunday in a daze with reality spun like sweet cotton candy around him. Sure, he’d been online and seen that everyone believed he was dating Kris, but he hadn’t boarded that train of thought to consider the people of Kira City would treat him differently because of it. Why would they? He was just Jonah.

Yet by the time he left the palace Monday morning, it turned out that he wasn’t himself anymore.

He was the boyfriend of a prince.

It started with the unsettling feeling that he was being watched. No one actually stared at him, but he got the sense they were aware of him as he strode down the steep streets. He caught little glances in the corner of his eye, overheard animated whispers. It was weird, and at one point as he waited to cross the road, he was pretty sure the youth next to him held their phone up for a selfie that included him over their shoulder.

Then there was Nora. He met her for brunch at a lakeside café, astonished that she’d reserved the exclusive table on the shaded rooftop. It looked out over the lake dotted with rowboats, had fancy table settings (he’d have claimed they were fit for a king if he hadn’t sat at an actual royal table the night before), and came with an entire waiter all to themselves.

“How did you manage this?” he asked excitedly, tucking his chair in. “Isn’t the roof for important people?”

Her brows hung high as she stared at him. “Yeah.”

“Oh my God.” He leaned forward, lowering his voice. “Who are you really?”

“Jonah!” Laughing, she smacked him on the arm with a menu. “You’re dating Prince Kristof.”

“Oh.” He leaned back quickly, and it felt like falling. “So?”

“You have influence now, man.” Her silver hair was bright, her nose ring glinting. “We don’t lose our heads over royalty here, but we treat them right. You’re not going to blend in with us commoners anymore.”

“But I am a commoner.” He held the term possessively. “I want to blend in.”

“Babe,” she said, shaking her head. “You’re directly involved with the royal family. The way we treat you is reflective of the way we view them. Giving you the good table is, by extension, giving them the good table. And they’ll never dine with the plebs.”

But the boys didn’t want the good table either. “He sat in a regular booth at the bar.”

“Because he specifically requested it. Same way he asked for everyone to pretend he’s not a prince when he comes in. That’s not the way we actually view him.” Nora’s frown was confused. “Haven’t you two talked about this?”

Dismay settled over him. “Not yet.”

“Okay.” She sounded unsure. “Maybe you should? Things are going to change for you. Effective immediately, because your face is literally clogging up all my social feeds.” She provided proof by showing him
